Signing of two new agreements in the frame of the LignoBioLife project

On February 21st at the headquarters of the Agrarian Cooperative Santa María Magdalena, under the supervision of ADASUR, represented by its president María Esperanza Magán Bronchalo, two collaboration agreements were signed by the Director of the Department of Environment of FGUA and the representatives of two partners, the Agrarian Cooperative and the Denomination of Origin Mondéjar. In these agreements, all parties recognized the importance of the objectives linked to the European project "Lignobiolife" on two of the predominant crops in the area, the vine and the olive tree.
During the signing of the document, the representative of the Denomination of Origin stated that: "We are very interested in improving the sustainability of the cultural practices of the vine and the olive tree, in reducing the use of chemical synthesis pesticides and, in seeing the result of the opportunities generated by the novel proposals of this project with the use of pruning waste".

The Lignobiolife project started in 2018 where, among other partners, two Rural Action Groups from Portugal (Douro and Dueceira) and one from Spain (Adasur), with the General Foundation of the University of Alcalá (a European referrer in research and application of wood vinegar) participated in the European LIFE initiative with a research project to obtain a natural herbicide from pruning residues that could replace the well-known glyphosate in certain applications.
Now, thanks to this project carried out on two testing parcels of vine and olive, the University of Alcalá and INIA (National Institute for Agricultural Research and Technology) will study for three years, not only the effects of the herbicide "wood vinegar", but also two other products known with the names of "biochar" and "bio-bitumen" also coming from treated agricultural residues. In the case of biochar, the aim is to study its use as a soil improver with the added effect of a carbon sink and, in the case of bio-bitumen, as a natural bitumen to improve asphalt and roads.
